Dalam novel pendek yang menarik ini, Fyodor Dostoevsky, salah satu penyair terkemuka Rusia, menceritakan kisah Alexey Ivanovitch, seorang tutor muda yang bekerja di rumah tangga seorang jenderal Rusia yang angkuh. Alexey mencoba menerobos tembok tatanan yang mapan di Rusia, tetapi malah terperosok dalam spiral taruhan dan kekalahan yang tak ada habisnya. Dalam The Gambler, Dostoevsky mencapai puncak drama dengan potret psikologis yang menakjubkan ini.
Dalam karya ini, seperti biasa Dostoevsky akan memberikan nuansa bahagia dan kelam dalam sisi psikologis manusia. Dalam karakter-karakter yang dihadirkan, ini merupakan bacaan yang cocok untuk semua pembaca yang suka tantangan dalam kehidupan. Ya benar, untuk apa hidup jika tidak untuk ‘membuat hal baru’ dengan kehidupan?
Meskipun tema sentral dari novel pendek ini adalah perjudian, beberapa aspek penting yang membedakan The Gambler berbeda dari karya-karya Dostoevsky lainnya. The Gambler adalah otobiografi yang menyakitkan (mungkin yang paling otobiografi dari semua karyanya) dalam dua hal: kecanduan Dostoevsky terhadap perjudian hampir pasti merupakan inspirasi bagi novella dan karakter sentralnya Alexei; dan perselingkuhan Dostoevsky dengan kekasihnya Suslova, selama pernikahan pertamanya, tercermin dalam penggambarannya tentang hubungan antara Alexei dan Polina.

Dalam konteks hubungan sosiopolitik Rusia-Eropa abad ke-19, Dostoevsky telah membuat penggambaran yang mungkin keras tentang orang Barat, yang mencerminkan pandangannya sendiri tentang stereotip nasional mereka, sebagaimana ditampilkan dalam gaya taruhan mereka: misalnya, semangat dan maksimalisme Rusia versus perhitungan dan kehati-hatian dingin dari Eropa Barat.
Menurut standar Dostoevsky, The Gambler adalah karya yang ‘lebih ringan’, tidak memiliki kesedihan psikologis dan kegelapan yang terlihat dalam banyak publikasi lainnya.
